Rationale
Many copyright questions encountered by repositories do not have a clear-cut answer. More often than not they intersect with policy decisions made by the host institution regarding; legal relationships with contributors, level of acceptable risk, commitment to open access, and regulatory and funding requirements. This workshop provided an opportunity for repository managers and the CAIRSS copyright team to have an open discussion about how some of these issues are being dealt with by various repositories and the type of tools available to help repositories address the issues appropriately and to help us frame training and information provision.
Purpose
- Present CAIRSS and Copyright: a Good Practice Guide. (2009 Version). (The current version of the Good Practice Guide is available within the CAIRSS Private Site for CAIRSS and CONZUL members)
- Explore some of the issues which have been raised with the copyright team by CAIRSS members (see the agenda below, and let us know of any additional suggestions)
- Determine whether the face to face workshop format is something we should do more widely

- Introduction to the new CAIRSS Copyright Good Practice Guide (2009 Version). (The current version of the Good Practice Guide is available within the CAIRSS Private Site for CAIRSS and CONZUL members)
- Presentation and group discussion / interaction
- Interpreting publisher policies/agreements
- Author deposit agreements – interaction with policies/procedures, liability issues, authorising further use by end-users
- Retrospective inclusion of theses in repositories
- Copyright in abstracts and metadata
- Risk management
- Including data sets in repositories
- Publication of PhD theses as rudimentary books
- Conclusion and launch of the guide
