CAIRSS Copyright Developments

CAIRSS will hold a workshop for CAIRSS/CAUL members on copyright issues and repositories on Tuesday 4 May in Sydney. Please see http://cairss.caul.edu.au/www/copyright/cairss_copyright_workshop.htm for details.

Presenters are Derek Whitehead, Robin Wright, Teula Morgan, with workshop numbers capped at 40 (so 1 representative from each CAUL/CAIRSS institution is invited to attend).

Many copyright questions encountered by repositories do not have a clear-cut answer. More often than not they intersect with policy decisions made by the host institution regarding; legal relationships with contributors, level of acceptable risk, commitment to open access, and regulatory and funding requirements. This workshop will provide an opportunity for repository managers and the CAIRSS copyright team to have an open discussion about how some of these issues are being dealt with by various repositories and the type of tools available to help repositories address the issues appropriately and to help us frame training and information provision.

Agenda includes: Introduction to the new CAIRSS Copyright Good Practice Guide, Presentation and group discussion / interaction; Interpreting publisher policies/agreements; Author deposit agreements (interaction with policies/procedures, liability issues, authorising further use by end-users); Retrospective inclusion of theses in repositories; Copyright in abstracts and metadata; Risk management; Including data sets in repositories; and Publication of PhD theses as rudimentary books.

CAIRSS is also launching the CAIRSS and Copyright: a Good Practice Guide available at http://cairss.caul.edu.au/www/copyright/a_good_practice_guide.htm Please consult for your interest.

CAIRSS Repository Software Sandbox

CAIRSS has launched the new Repository Software Sandbox for CAIRSS community members. See: http://cairss.caul.edu.au/www/sandbox/sandbox.htm This service was developed in response to requests from CAIRSS community members.

This new CAIRSS Repository Software Sandbox offers CAIRSS Repository Managers and Technical Officers the opportunity to:

  • Test and try out different repository software options to their current software
  • Experiment with configuration changes with a number of repository software options
  • View resource types and objects in a number of repository software options All without having to install different repository software at their own institution.

The CAIRSS Repository Software Sandbox also allows the CAIRSS Technical Officer to test data migration between different repository software options, which will in turn assist CAIRSS community members when/if they decide to migrate to a new repository software platform.

The Sandbox started with open source repository software with ePrints and DSpace already added and The Fascinator, Fez and Squire coming soon. Some commercial repository software vendors have also come on board with links to a Digital Commons BePress instance also included. CAIRSS invites all CAIRSS community members to use the Sandbox for their testing/evaluation needs, and invites other commercial repository software vendors to have their software represented in the Sandbox.
